An explosion caused by a high-voltage underground cable surge rocked Ladbroke Road on the evening of Tuesday, 20 May, injuring two people and prompting a swift response from emergency services.
What Happened
At around 9pm, a sudden electrical surge caused a cable beneath the street to rupture violently, blasting debris into the air and leaving a visible crater on the road surface. Two individuals caught in the blast were reportedly thrown backwards by the force of the explosion.
One person was treated at the scene by London Ambulance Service crews for burn injuries, while the second was taken to hospital, where they remain undergoing treatment for more serious injuries. The extent of their condition has not yet been disclosed.
Witnesses Praised for Immediate Action
Neighbours and passersby who witnessed the explosion were quick to assist. Eyewitnesses say they rushed to administer first aid before emergency services arrived.
A local resident said:
It was traumatic for everyone involved. A huge thank you to the ambulance, fire and police services for their fast response, and also to our amazing friends and neighbours who acted immediately to help.
Emergency Services Response
Surrey Fire Brigade, police, and ambulance crews all attended the scene, with the area quickly cordoned off for safety. Engineers from the local power network have been assessing the infrastructure damage and the potential cause of the surge.
Ongoing Investigation
Authorities are working with power grid engineers to determine the exact cause of the electrical malfunction. Residents have been advised to avoid the area while repairs and investigations continue.
