A state of heightened tension has gripped the suburbs of Philadelphia as the manhunt for escaped Brazilian murderer Danelo Cavalcante continues. On Tuesday, schools in the Oakland J. Robert school district near Philadelphia were closed, and residents were advised to lock their doors after Cavalcante, who is considered “extremely dangerous,” managed to evade capture.
Cavalcante’s daring escape from Chester County Prison nearly two weeks ago has turned him into a subject of both fear and fascination among Americans. Despite the relentless efforts of law enforcement, including police dogs, drones, helicopters, and special armed units, the fugitive has managed to remain elusive.
Throughout his escape, Cavalcante has left a trail of criminal exploits that have unfolded like a grim reality TV show. Since scaling the prison wall on August 31, the 34-year-old has stolen new clothing, food, and even a van, which he later abandoned. He also managed to get a shave, altering his appearance.
The situation escalated on Monday night when Cavalcante broke into a home garage and stole a .22 caliber rifle equipped with a scope and flashlight. The homeowner confronted him and fired a pistol, but preliminary information suggests that Cavalcante evaded the shots and escaped.
Pennsylvania police spokesman George Bivens emphasised the urgency of the situation, stating that Cavalcante is now “considered armed and extremely dangerous.” To ensure public safety, schools in the area were closed, and residents were urged to be vigilant and secure their homes.
Despite a significant police presence in the search zone west of Philadelphia, the densely wooded terrain has posed challenges. Bivens defended the efforts of law enforcement, describing the search for Cavalcante as finding the “proverbial needle in the haystack.”
Cavalcante’s escape occurred just one week after he was sentenced to life in prison for the brutal murder of his girlfriend in 2021. He is also wanted for murder in Brazil.
In an effort to aid in his capture, the reward for information on Cavalcante’s whereabouts has been increased from $20,000 to $25,000. Several sightings of the fugitive have been reported, with varying descriptions of his appearance.
