< Elon Musk, the world’s richest man, is under fire after a gesture he made during a post-inauguration celebration for President Donald Trump in Washington, D.C., was branded a “Nazi salute” by critics on social media.
Musk took the stage at the Capital One Arena to address a crowd of Trump supporters following Trump’s swearing-in as the 47th President of the United States. During his speech, Musk placed his right hand on his chest and then raised it in the air.
Social Media Uproar
Videos of the moment quickly circulated online, with some accusing the Tesla and SpaceX CEO of mimicking a “Nazi salute.
One user on X (formerly Twitter) wrote: “Elon Musk just did a Hitler salute on stage. This is horrifying.”
Others defended Musk, arguing that his gesture was misinterpreted. Supporters described it as a heartfelt acknowledgment to the crowd.
“He was extending his heart to the audience. People are taking this completely out of context,” wrote one user, sharing a slowed-down version of the clip.
Musk’s Remarks and Performance
During his speech, Musk thanked the crowd for their role in Trump’s election victory:
“Elections come and go, some are important, some are not. But this one really mattered, and I just want to say thank you for making it happen. It is thanks to you that the future of civilization is assured.”
Musk also discussed his vision for space exploration, asking the audience to imagine the moment American astronauts plant the U.S. flag on Mars:
“Can you imagine how awesome it will be to have American astronauts plant the flag on another planet for the first time?”
He even mimicked planting a flag pole on stage, drawing cheers from the crowd. Musk added, “We’re going to take Doge to Mars,” referencing the Department of Government Efficiency, a term some interpreted as a playful nod to his affinity for Dogecoin and efficiency reforms.
Mixed Reactions
Critics have called on Musk to clarify his intentions behind the gesture. Meanwhile, Musk has not publicly responded to the accusations as of yet.
The controversy adds to Musk’s recent streak of polarizing public appearances and statements. It also highlights the politically charged atmosphere surrounding Trump’s return to the presidency and Musk’s close association with the administration.
