A violent robber who tried to steal a delivery van in Gravesend has been jailed for over three years — thanks to the quick thinking and bravery of his intended victim.
During the afternoon of 30 November 2024, the delivery driver had just returned to her van after dropping off a parcel on Ingoldsby Road when she was attacked. The assailant grabbed her clothing, dragged her out of the driver’s seat, and threw her to the ground.
He then climbed into the van and attempted to start the engine. However, when the vehicle failed to start, the courageous driver seized her opportunity — reaching back into the van to snatch the ignition key and fleeing to a nearby house for safety.
Although the attacker managed to steal some parcels from the passenger seat, he was forced to abandon the van and escape on foot.
Quick Police Work Leads to Arrest
Kent Police officers reviewed CCTV footage from the area, which clearly captured the offender’s face. Mitchell, of Thistle Road, Gravesend, was identified and arrested on 8 January 2025. During the arrest, police seized a white hooded top that he had worn during the robbery.
Mitchell was picked out during an identification procedure and later pleaded guilty to robbery at Woolwich Crown Court. On Tuesday, 29 April, the 48-year-old was sentenced to three years and two months in prison.
Police Praise Victim’s Courage
Detective Constable Andrew Saunders, of North Kent CID, praised the victim, saying:
"Mitchell is a violent and cowardly bully who thought he could steal a van full of parcels by assaulting the woman driver. He was foiled by the tenacious victim who saw her chance to grab the vehicle keys when the engine did not start up. She should be commended for her brave actions."
He added:
"Once we recovered CCTV footage that allowed us to identify him, it was only a matter of time before he was arrested and brought to justice. Gravesend will be a safer place in his absence."
