A man is in custody after attempting to flee from officers during a routine traffic stop in Oxford — but was quickly caught by a fast-footed police officer known for his marathon running.

The incident unfolded earlier today when officers stopped a vehicle and trailer in Oxford to carry out routine checks. While the trailer was found to be in order, the driver repeatedly gave false personal details, raising suspicions.

As delays mounted, the man made a sudden attempt to flee the scene, but didn’t make it far. He was swiftly chased down by PC Tillyer, a member of the Roads Policing Taskforce — and a seasoned marathon runner.

Suspect in Custody

The driver was arrested at the scene and is now in custody on suspicion of:

• Immigration offences

• Possession of a Class B drug

• Driving while disqualified

A police spokesperson praised the swift response:

“Thanks to the persistence of officers — and some impressive sprinting from PC Tillyer — this individual was safely apprehended.”
