A dispersal order has been implemented in Sittingbourne town centre as police crack down on rising incidents of antisocial behaviour. The order, which came into effect at 7.30pm on Tuesday, 18 February, will remain in place until 7.30pm on Thursday, 20 February.
The designated area covered by the order includes key parts of the town centre, stretching across the A2, West Street, High Street, East Street, the Sittingbourne Retail Park, Eurolink Way, Mill Way, and Albany Park.
The decision follows a spate of reports from residents and local businesses concerning disruptive behaviour, predominantly involving groups of young people. In response, police are increasing patrols to maintain public safety and order.
Inspector Julia Bassindale addressed community concerns, stating, “Our officers have received recent reports from residents and business owners about incidents of antisocial behaviour and disorder, involving a minority of young people. The town centre is frequently patrolled and we will not hesitate to require anyone causing a nuisance to leave the area. They are then risking arrest if they choose to return.”
Under the dispersal order, officers have the authority to instruct individuals or groups to leave the area if they are suspected of contributing to antisocial behaviour. Anyone who ignores such a direction and returns to the restricted zone within 48 hours may face arrest.
In addition to enforcement, Kent Police are collaborating with local schools and youth organisations to address the root causes of the disorder. “Our constables are also working with schools and youth organisations and, where a child is found to be consistently causing an issue in the town, the officers will be speaking to parents and issuing warning notices where appropriate,” added Inspector Bassindale.
The dispersal order aims to provide immediate relief to affected businesses and residents while encouraging young people to seek positive alternatives. Authorities are urging the community to report any further incidents during the enforcement period to assist in maintaining a safe environment for all.
