Firefighters have returned to Dartford Heath this morning to tackle lingering hotspots following last night’s significant wildfire.
According to Kent Fire and Rescue Service, crews identified areas of residual heat and are now using flexi packs and hose reel jets to dampen down the affected areas. A further inspection is scheduled for this afternoon to ensure the scene is fully safe.
Fire Now Under Control – But Public Cautioned
At the height of the fire on Friday evening, six fire engines, a bulk water carrier, and a Utility Terrain Vehicle (UTV) were deployed to the heathland blaze. No injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire remains unknown.
While the initial smoke warning for residents to close windows and doors was lifted around 10pm, firefighters have urged continued caution over the weekend, warning that smouldering patches could still reignite if disturbed or left unattended.
Wildfire Advice from Fire Crews
In light of recent hot and dry conditions, Kent Fire and Rescue Service is urging the public to take extra care when visiting heathland and countryside areas:
- Don’t discard cigarettes or glass bottles
- Avoid lighting barbecues or bonfires near dry vegetation
- Use designated barbecue areas only
- Dispose of rubbish properly to prevent accidental ignition
The wildfire, which broke out around 4.30pm on Friday, drew around 40 emergency calls from the public. The initial response was swift and effective in stopping the fire from spreading to nearby roads and residential areas.
Anyone who spots signs of fire or smoke in the area is advised to call 999 immediately.
