SLAMMED Dangerous Driver Jailed for Killing Pedestrian on M20 While Texting

A man was tragically killed on the M20 after being struck by a van driven by a texting driver. Ionut Bejan was caught using WhatsApp just moments before the fatal crash.

WhatsApp Distraction Leads to Death

Bejan, 23, frantically sent and edited messages, even updating a group chat picture, while behind the wheel of his overloaded Iveco box van. At around 10.10pm on 14 February 2025, a family had pulled over on the hard shoulder between junctions 8 and 9 near Charing after suspecting a car fault.

When 71-year-old Zdzislaw Tarbaj stepped out to check, Bejans van smashed into him at speed. Emergency services arrived quickly but sadly confirmed Mr Tarbaj was dead at the scene.

Overloaded Van and Reckless Driving

Police found Bejans van was carrying more than 5,000kg, far exceeding the permitted 3,500kg limit. Meanwhile, phone records revealed nine WhatsApp messages sent just before and after the crash including one message edited in a way impossible to do hands-free.

Bejan, from Hereford, was arrested and charged with causing death by dangerous driving.

Harsh Sentence for Fatal Negligence

At Maidstone Crown Court on 12 November, Bejan pleaded guilty. He was slammed with a nine-year, nine-month prison sentence and disqualified from driving for 13 and a half years. Hell also need to pass an extended driving test before getting behind the wheel again.

Detective Constable Kayleigh Archer said: A devoted husband, father and grandfather lost his life because of one mans reckless and illegal choices.

Bejan chose to use his phone while driving and knowingly overloaded his van. The victims family, present during the crash, describe him as a hero and guiding light and have been left traumatised.

We hope this sentence brings some closure.

Warning to All Drivers

Our message to all motorists is clear, added DC Archer. Drive responsibly. Stick to speed limits, never use mobiles behind the wheel, stay alert, and keep your vehicle roadworthy. Ignoring these simple rules endangers lives.
