A major crash involving an overturned lorry has brought traffic to a standstill on a key A-road this morning, prompting urgent recovery efforts and significant travel disruption.
The incident occurred at the Brownhills Roundabout on the A46 northbound, between the A617 (Cattle Market Roundabout) and the A1 at Winthorpe, just outside Newark.
Emergency Response Underway
Emergency services, including Nottinghamshire Police and National Highways contractors, are currently at the scene managing a complex recovery and clear-up operation. Authorities are urging drivers to plan ahead, expect significant delays, and avoid the area where possible.
A spokesperson for National Highways East Midlands said:
“We are working with emergency services to safely recover the overturned HGV and reopen the road as soon as possible. We appreciate the public’s patience while this is underway.
Diversion Route in Place
National Highways has issued a diversion for vehicles affected by the A46 closure:
- Exit the A46 northbound at Cattle Market Roundabout
- Join the A616 northbound
- At the South Muskham mini-roundabout, continue on the B6325
- Join the A1 southbound
- Exit at A46 Winthorpe junction to rejoin A46 northbound
Motorists should allow extra journey time and check for updates via National Highways or local travel reports.
Traffic and Travel Impact
Congestion is building in surrounding areas including Newark-on-Trent, with delays stretching beyond 30 minutes on approach. Local businesses and commuters have reported gridlock on nearby roads due to the diversion.
There have been no confirmed injuries at this time. Authorities are expected to release more information as the investigation into the cause of the crash progresses.
