A Coventry man, Pengqi Sun, has been found guilty of murdering 22-year-old Coventry University student Shuo Zou and injuring another student in a vicious knife attack that unfolded in the city centre on April 6.
The incident occurred during a gathering organised by Shuo Zou and his friends, celebrating a mutual acquaintance with the defendant, Pengqi Sun. A dispute arose between the two, leading to an assault on Shuo Zou, promptly halted by friends. However, Sun didn’t let the matter rest and later armed himself with two blades from a broken pair of scissors and a knife.
Sun located his adversaries at a bus stop and launched a brutal attack, fatally injuring Shuo Zou with a neck wound. Another friend who attempted to intervene suffered serious hand injuries. Tragically, Shuo Zou lost his life at the scene.
Pengqi Sun was swiftly arrested after being pointed out by witnesses, and he claimed self-defense. However, a jury at Warwick Crown Court found him guilty of the murder of Shuo Zou and wounding with intent. He was cleared of attempted murder.
Detective Inspector Damian Forrest from the Homicide Unit expressed the profound tragedy of the situation, stating, “Shuo Zou died from a stab wound miles from home and his family. This is a tragedy that escalated from a minor disagreement, and our sympathies remain with Shuo’s family and friends.”
Pengqi Sun, residing on Hales Street, Coventry, is scheduled to be sentenced on Monday, October 9.
