A close protection officer responsible for safeguarding Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has been arrested and suspended following allegations related to betting on the timing of the upcoming general election. The officer, a member of the Metropolitan Police’s Royalty and Specialist Protection Command, faces serious misconduct charges.

The Met’s Royalty and Specialist Protection Command is tasked with providing personal close protection to ministerial VIPs and members of the Royal Family. However, recent developments have cast a shadow over the unit’s integrity.

The Gambling Commission, an independent regulatory body, alerted the Metropolitan Police last week about their ongoing investigation into the officer’s betting activity. The constable’s alleged wagers on election timing prompted immediate action.

Officers from the Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards swiftly launched an internal investigation, during which the officer was removed from operational duties. On Monday, the constable was arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office. He has been taken into custody and released on bail pending further inquiries.

In addition to the Met’s internal investigation, the matter has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC). The IOPC oversees complaints and allegations against police officers, ensuring transparency and accountability.
