A caravan and an outbuilding were destroyed in a fire that broke out just after 9:20pm on Dering Way in Gravesend, prompting emergency warnings for local residents to close windows and doors due to heavy smoke.
Three fire engines from Kent Fire and Rescue Service attended the scene. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used main jets to bring the blaze under control.
Cause Linked to Out-of-Control Bonfire
A spokesperson for the service confirmed that the fire is believed to have started after a bonfire became uncontrollable, quickly spreading to nearby structures.
While no injuries were reported, the incident caused significant alarm in the area. Residents were advised to stay indoors and avoid smoke exposure while the fire was tackled.
Smoke Alert Now Lifted
At approximately 10:30pm, Kent Fire and Rescue confirmed that firefighting operations were complete, and the earlier advice to keep windows and doors shut had been lifted.
Safety Reminder from Fire Crews
Following the incident, firefighters issued a reminder to the public about bonfire safety, urging people to:
-
Keep bonfires well away from buildings and flammable items
-
Supervise all fires at all times
-
Keep a bucket of water or a hose nearby for emergencies
