Fans of BBC’s much-loved drama Call the Midwife have reason to celebrate as reports confirm that filming for the show’s fifteenth series is officially underway — with a festive Christmas special also in production.
According to The Sun, the cast and crew are gearing up for another heartwarming season, with returning stars Linda Bassett, Cliff Parisi, Georgie Glen and Stephen McGann all expected to reprise their beloved roles.
An insider told the outlet: “Pre-production is already in full swing and scripts are being finalised. The cast will all reunite from next month to shoot their scenes for the new series as well as the Christmas special.”
While the new season will follow its traditional New Year slot, producers are currently prioritising the Christmas episode — a long-standing tradition for the series, which has become a staple of the BBC’s festive line-up.
“The biggest challenge, like always, is the crew transforming the set to make it look like the depths of winter, just as the weather gets milder, with the cast layering up too,” the source added.
The news follows recent speculation about the long-term future of Call the Midwife, after series creator Heidi Thomas teased the idea of a potential spin-off and the possibility of the show taking a break in the future.
Speaking to Radio Times, Thomas shared: “Those of us who are most invested with the show, cast and producers alike, who have been there since the beginning, it is our lives. I don’t believe Call the Midwife will ever end. But I do think we might take a break at some point.”
The acclaimed period drama, which first aired in 2012, has captivated audiences with its emotional storytelling, historical depth, and strong ensemble cast, chronicling the lives of midwives and nurses in London’s East End during the post-war era.
With its 15th season on the horizon and another Christmas special promised, fans can look forward to more poignant and powerful stories from Nonnatus House — even as conversations about the show’s evolution continue behind the scenes.
The BBC has yet to officially confirm the air dates for the Christmas special or Series 15.
