Businesses Evacuated after Burst Water Main in Newport leaves hundred without Water Supply
Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Crews are working with Southern Water Contractors to stop water from a damaged water main flooding further businesses in Manners View in Newport this afternoon. The fire service said the cause of the flooding is a burst water main. Two fire appliances are on scene pumping water into the River Medina.

Hundred of Homes on the Bluebell Meadows Estate have been left without a water supply whilst engineers work on returning pressure to the system. This may take up to a few hours. Fire Crews are likely to remain at the scene of the incident that is under control for sometime. Police have closed access and have advised surrounding businesses to remove vehicles from the effected area. A number of children have been evacuated from JR Zone as a result of the incident, which has left the ground floor flooded. No one has been injured in the incident, but it it said that it will take some time for the business to clear the mess. Around 3,000 litres of water per minute is being pumped away by fire crews according to the incident commander. A spokesperson for Southern Water has said: We’re dealing with a burst water main on an industrial estate on Manner View road in Newport. The fire brigade are helping us pump out the affected areas and the road is closed. Further update from Southern Water: “We’d like to apologise to all customers affected by yesterday’s burst on the industrial estate in Manner View Road, Newport. “We’re pleased to say that repairs to the 450mm main were completed at around midnight last night. “Our clean up crews and support teams are on site today to help and advise all affected customers. “We’d like to thank Island Roads and the Environment Agency for their help during yesterday’s incident, but most of all the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service, who helped us to pump water out of affected units and protected many other buildings from flooding.” To repair the main, we needed to cut out and replace a 1.7metre section of damaged pipe. Seven commercial properties were affected by flooding and around 300 residences were without water for around two hours last night (8-10pm). This was while their water supply was re-zoned so we could safely repair the burst main.
