Thieves Steal Safe Containing Cash and Sentimental Jewellery in Rotherham Raid
A devastating burglary at Byron Lodge Care Home in West Melton, Rotherham, has left elderly residents shaken after intruders broke in and stole a safe containing cash and sentimental jewellery.
The callous raid took place in the early hours of Monday, January 27, 2025, between 12:35 AM and 1:45 AM, prompting a major police investigation.
Thieves Target Vulnerable Residents
According to South Yorkshire Police, burglars breached the care home’s security measures before making off with substantial cash amounts and irreplaceable personal jewellery belonging to residents.
Officers are now reviewing CCTV footage and conducting door-to-door enquiries in an effort to track down those responsible.
Detective Inspector Mark Withers from South Yorkshire Police described the burglary as “a heartless crime that has caused immense distress to some of the most vulnerable members of our community.”
“These individuals preyed on elderly residents who should feel safe in their own home. We are treating this as a priority and urge anyone with information to come forward immediately.”
Community Outrage Over Heartless Crime
The incident has sparked widespread outrage across Rotherham, with locals condemning the crime as despicable and cruel.
Lisa Carter, whose elderly mother is a resident at Byron Lodge, said:
“It’s absolutely disgusting that someone would target a care home. These people have no shame. The jewellery stolen wasn’t just valuable—it had deep sentimental meaning to my mum.
Police Appeal for Information
South Yorkshire Police are urging anyone with CCTV footage, dashcam recordings, or information to contact them immediately.

Care Home Security Under Scrutiny
The burglary has raised serious concerns about security at care homes, with local councillors calling for urgent reviews of safety measures to prevent similar attacks.
Care home managers are now working with authorities to enhance security, including increased CCTV coverage and additional patrols.
South Yorkshire Police have also reassured residents that increased patrols will take place in the area.
