A man has been sentenced following his involvement in a violent mob during an incident in Bristol on Saturday, August 3. The event saw widespread disorder as a group threatened violence, causing fear among the public and law enforcement. The court heard that the individual, identified as [First Name] Matthews, actively participated in the unrest by throwing glass bottles and cans at police officers and members of the public.

During the hearing at Bristol Crown Court, Judge Patrick condemned Matthews for his blatant disregard for the law and public safety. The court was shown footage of Matthews not only hurling missiles but also attempting to break through police lines and throwing punches at officers.

“Matthews clearly does not have any respect for the courts, police, or the law,” Judge Patrick remarked. The judge described the group involved as a “violent mob” incited by misinformation related to an incident in another city, Southport. This misinformation is believed to have contributed to the disorder in Bristol.

Detective Chief Inspector Clement Goodwin, who led the investigation, expressed satisfaction with the court’s decision. “Matthews’ behavior on that day was completely disgraceful. He showed an utter disregard for the safety of members of the public and police officers,” DCI Goodwin said. I am pleased with the lengthy prison sentence handed down to Matthews.

Matthews is the tenth person to be jailed in connection with the unrest, out of a total of 41 arrests made so far. The police are continuing their investigation, with 28 individuals charged, indicating that further legal proceedings are likely to follow.
