David Malcolm, 43, of Eastville, has been found guilty of manslaughter following the death of Aliki ‘Alex’ Mamwa in St Pauls earlier this year. The jury at Bristol Crown Court delivered the verdict on Friday, September 13, 2024.
Malcolm fatally stabbed 30-year-old Mamwa on March 5 during a confrontation in the St Pauls area. While the jury rejected Malcolm’s claim of self-defence, they determined that he did not intend to kill or cause serious harm to Mamwa. As a result, Malcolm was acquitted of murder but convicted of manslaughter and possession of a bladed article.
The incident stemmed from a personal dispute between the two men. On February 14, they were involved in an altercation where Mamwa sustained a cut above his eye. The following day, Malcolm was reported to have assaulted his girlfriend with a baseball bat modified with car parts, which was described in court as a “fearsome” weapon.
On the day of the fatal incident, Malcolm was seen driving around St Pauls for over an hour before locating Mamwa. During a brief confrontation, Malcolm stabbed Mamwa in the upper thigh. Despite being rushed to the hospital by a taxi, Mamwa tragically succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.
Detective Chief Inspector Phil Walker, who led the investigation, commented: "David Malcolm’s actions that night tragically led to the death of a young man and the loss of a much-loved friend and family member to those who knew him." He also praised the dignity shown by Mamwa’s family throughout the ordeal and thanked the St Pauls community for their support during the investigation.
The case has highlighted the devastating consequences of knife crime and personal disputes escalating to violence. Sentencing for Malcolm is scheduled for Tuesday, September 17, 2024.
