Bristol City manager Liam Manning has taken a leave of absence following the heartbreaking death of his newborn son, Theo John Manning. The club announced the news on Monday, expressing their deepest sympathies for Manning and his family during this incredibly difficult time.
Manning, who has been in charge at Ashton Gate since November 2023, is known for his tactical approach to football, focusing on high possession and high pressing. The 38-year-old had previously managed MK Dons and Oxford United before taking the reins at Bristol City.
In a statement, the club said: “Everyone at Bristol City Football Club is deeply saddened by the passing of Liam’s recently born son, Theo John Manning. We know that Bristol City’s supporters and the wider football family will share their condolences and deepest sympathy with Liam, his wife Fran, and his son Isaac during this difficult period.
The club also confirmed that Manning’s assistant, Chris Hogg, would take over football duties temporarily while Manning takes time away to be with his family. The statement added: “We ask that the privacy of Liam and his family is respected during this time.”
Hogg, who has been Manning’s right-hand man since their time at MK Dons, will now lead the team as interim manager. Bristol City currently sit 16th in the Championship table, having secured two wins, five draws, and two losses in their first nine games of the season. Their next fixture is a trip to Middlesbrough on Saturday.
Fellow Championship clubs have sent messages of support to Manning and his family. Plymouth Argyle, Norwich City, and West Bromwich Albion were among the teams offering their condolences on social media.
Bristol City fans, along with the wider football community, are rallying behind Manning as he and his family mourn the loss of their beloved son, Theo.
