In a surprising turn of events, Las Vegas police have reportedly made an arrest in connection with the long-standing mystery surrounding the murder of hip-hop legend Tupac Shakur. The rapper was fatally shot four times in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas in 1996, and the identity of his killer has remained elusive for almost three decades.
According to sources speaking to the Associated Press (AP) news agency, the arrest was made on Friday morning. The suspect is currently in the process of being booked, and charges related to Tupac Shakur’s murder are expected to be announced later on Friday.
Tupac Shakur, considered one of hip-hop’s most acclaimed rappers, was only 25 years old at the time of his death. He was shot on September 7, 1996, in Las Vegas and succumbed to his injuries in the hospital six days later.
The case had gone cold for many years until a potential breakthrough occurred over the summer. In July, police conducted a nighttime search of a residence in the Las Vegas area in connection with the Tupac murder investigation. The suspect was taken into custody without incident early Friday morning while on a walk near his home, where the earlier search had taken place.
