Authorities have identified the suspect in the New Orleans New Year’s Eve attack as Shamsud Din Jabbar, a 42-year-old man who reportedly carried an ISIS flag during the deadly rampage that left 10 people dead and 30 others injured.
Jabbar drove a white Ford SUV into crowds of revelers on Bourbon Street in the early hours of January 1, before exiting the vehicle and opening fire on responding officers. Two police officers were injured in the exchange of gunfire, and Jabbar was killed at the scene.
ISIS Flag Raises Questions
Investigators discovered an ISIS flag in the SUV, fueling speculation about the suspect’s motives and possible links to the terrorist organization. The FBI has confirmed it is treating the incident as an act of terrorism and is investigating any connections Jabbar may have had with ISIS or other extremist groups.
Statement from Authorities
New Orleans Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick condemned the attack as a calculated and heinous act:
“This was a deliberate attempt to cause maximum harm and fear during a time meant for celebration. Our community is grieving deeply, and we will work tirelessly to ensure justice.
FBI agents have taken over the investigation and are examining evidence to determine if Jabbar acted alone or was part of a larger network.
National and Local Leaders React
President Joe Biden addressed the nation, calling the attack “an act of pure evil.” He pledged federal support for New Orleans and reiterated the administration’s commitment to combating terrorism.
President-elect Donald Trump also issued a statement, criticizing current immigration policies and linking the attack to broader national security concerns.
Community in Shock
The attack has left New Orleans reeling. Bourbon Street, a cultural and tourist hub, remains cordoned off as investigators process the scene. Residents have expressed grief and anger over the violence, which disrupted the New Year’s festivities and claimed innocent lives.
Next Steps
The FBI and local authorities are expected to release additional details as the investigation continues. A public briefing has been scheduled for later today to update the community on the ongoing efforts to uncover the full scope of the attack.
