A Border Force vessel has intercepted an overcrowded inflatable boat carrying between 70 and 80 people in the English Channel this morning.
Overloaded Dinghy Spotted
The 8ft grey inflatable, described as well-inflated but dangerously overcrowded, was intercepted in mid-Channel just after 7am. The boat was carrying 70 to 80 migrant attempting the crossing from France to the UK.
Officials confirmed the vessel was picked up by the Border Force Defender, which is now transporting those onboard to Dover after it carries out a second rescue of a inflatable that is at risk of capsizing.
Other Vessels in Distress
Sources said a number of other small boats were also seen in the Channel at the same time. Some were reported to be “seriously low in the water” and at risk of capsizing under the weight of passengers.
A “large number” of people are believed to be onboard those craft.
Rescue Operation Ongoing
The operation is continuing this morning with multiple agencies, including the Border and French maritime authorities, involved in monitoring the situation.
The Home Office has not yet released an official statement.
