Wiltshire Police have confirmed the recovery of a body from the River Avon in Chippenham, believed to be that of 21-year-old Sebastian Sailes, who was reported missing late last month.
Police divers discovered the body during a targeted search operation following Sebastian’s disappearance on Thursday, 27 February, when he was last seen walking along Lovers Walk after leaving the Black Horse Pub at around 11.30pm. He was thought to be heading south on Avon Valley Walk toward his home in Notton.
Sebastian’s family have been informed of the tragic development. While formal identification is still to take place, Wiltshire Police have said the discovery is believed to bring the search to a devastating end.
“Devastating News for Sebastian’s Family”
Speaking on behalf of the force, Superintendent James Brain said:
“This development will of course be devastating for Sebastian’s family. I would like to offer my sincere condolences, and I know that everyone involved in supporting this operation will also be thinking of Sebastian’s family.
We will continue to offer our support over the coming days, and I would ask that their privacy is respected at this incredibly difficult time.”
A Community United in the Search
Since Sebastian was reported missing, Wiltshire Police have coordinated a large-scale search effort, supported by Wiltshire Search and Rescue, Lowland Rescue Oxfordshire, specialist teams from neighbouring forces, local businesses, and community volunteers.
The news has sent ripples of sadness across Chippenham, where Sebastian was well known and loved. Tributes have begun pouring in online from friends, family, and community members who had hoped for his safe return.
Ongoing Enquiries
Police have not released further details regarding the circumstances surrounding Sebastian’s death, but an investigation will continue alongside the coroner’s process following formal identification.
