A 50-year-old man from Batley has been sentenced to 18 years and eight months in prison after pleading guilty to two serious sexual assaults on a young girl. David Gray was jailed at Leeds Crown Court yesterday following his conviction for offences that took place over three years, from 2020 to 2023.
The case, which began in January 2024, culminated in a guilty plea during a June hearing, after which the offender, known as Gray, was held in custody until his sentencing.
Detective Constable Natalie Green of the Kirklees District Child Safeguarding Unit led the investigation. In a statement, she highlighted the gravity of Gray’s crimes and praised the bravery of the victim and her family. Gray clearly poses a significant danger to young children, and we welcome the strong sentence handed down by the court,” DC Green remarked. The appalling offences he committed against a young victim have deeply affected her, starkly illustrating the dreadful impact these crimes have on victims.
DC Green also expressed gratitude toward the victim and her family for their courage in the face of such trauma. I would personally like to thank the victim and her family for their courage and strength during the investigation and for coming forward and speaking of the crimes committed by Gray. We continue to urge victims of sexual assault to come forward, no matter when the offending took place. All reports will be thoroughly investigated by our specially trained officers, who will also provide you with support throughout.
The Kirklees District Child Safeguarding Unit remains dedicated to protecting the community’s most vulnerable and ensuring that justice is served for those who suffer from such heinous crimes. The case underscores the importance of reporting and addressing sexual offences to safeguard children and prevent future harm.
