A teenager who tragically died after being struck by a car in Plaistow has been named as 18-year-old Maryam Nabil Shuwey from Stratford. The incident occurred on Barking Road on October 15 when a Nissan Juke mounted the pavement, fatally hitting Maryam.
The driver of the vehicle, a 45-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He was taken to hospital for treatment before being taken into police custody. The driver has since been released on bail pending further investigation.
Following the crash, Barking Road was closed for several hours as emergency services responded and investigators worked at the scene. A scene was in place for hours while emergency personnel managed the aftermath of the crash, with commuters and motorists advised to avoid the area.
Maryam’s family has been informed and is receiving support from specialist officers as they come to terms with their loss. Police are continuing their investigation into the full circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.
Chief Superintendent Dan Card, leading policing in Newham, said: “I know that local people will be feeling shocked and distressed by the tragic loss of a young woman’s life in such horrific circumstances. Please know that we share those feelings, and we are doing everything we can to support our Serious Collision Investigation Unit colleagues as they investigate.”
He also praised the swift actions of two off-duty officers who were near the scene when the collision occurred, as well as members of the public who rushed to offer help. “While the outcome was not what anyone would have wished for, I would like to extend my thanks to those people,” Chief Superintendent Card added.
Chief Superintendent Thomas Naughton, of the Met’s Roads and Transport Policing Command, said: “This is a tragic and deeply upsetting incident for everyone concerned. We are doing everything we can to support the victim’s family and we ask that their privacy be respected as they struggle to come to terms with their unimaginable loss.
Police are appealing to anyone who witnessed the incident or has footage to come forward. They urge anyone with information to contact the Serious Collision Investigation Unit directly.
The investigation is ongoing, and police have advised the community that there will be a heightened police presence in the area over the coming days.
