A 43-year-old man arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life following a fire on Erith Pier has been released on bail, pending further enquiries.
Emergency services raced to the scene on Friday, 9 May, after a large fire broke out around 5pm, sending thick smoke billowing into the sky.
Firefighters Tackle Dramatic Blaze
Images shared online showed London Fire Brigade crews battling the flames. The London Ambulance Service confirmed it was called at 4.47pm, dispatching:
- One ambulance crew
- An incident response officer
- The Hazardous Area Response Team (HART)
Fortunately, no injuries were reported at the scene.
Police Confirm Bail and Ongoing Investigation
The man, who was arrested at the scene, was taken into custody and questioned. He has since been released on bail as the investigation continues.
"No charges have been brought forward at this stage," a Met Police spokesperson said.
