Shrewsbury Road in Manton was the site of an alarming incident on Friday 29 September when a play park was set ablaze, causing an estimated £50,000 worth of damage. The police were alerted to the fire at Rainbow Park at approximately 16.00 BST
Authorities quickly launched an investigation into the incident, suspecting that the fire had been intentionally started. After thoroughly examining CCTV footage, officers identified two suspects who were subsequently questioned in connection with the arson attack.
Inspector Hayley Crawford, District Commander for Bassetlaw, expressed her deep disappointment on behalf of the local community, particularly for the children who have lost their beloved play park. Families and children have been deprived of a safe and enjoyable space due to this mindless act of vandalism.
Reassuring the community, Inspector Crawford emphasised the seriousness with which the incident is being treated. The investigation remains ongoing, and appropriate action will be taken against those involved in the arson attack.
Arson is an extremely serious offence that can have catastrophic consequences. To aid in their inquiries, law enforcement officials will collaborate closely with fire colleagues, conducting thorough investigations and gathering all available evidence.
Simon Cookson, district prevention officer for Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service, echoed the gravity of deliberate fire setting. He emphasised the importance of collaboration among the fire service, police, and local council partners to ensure the safety of community spaces. Deliberate fires not only waste resources but also put lives and property at risk.
Councillor Darrell Pulk, cabinet member for environment and energy at Bassetlaw District Council, condemned the acts of vandalism and antisocial behavior. He highlighted the play park’s purpose of providing children with a safe and enjoyable area for play and fun. Such incidents divert essential time and resources away from emergency services.
Two 11-year-old boys were interviewed in connection with the incident on Wednesday, 11 October. They have since been released under investigation as the police continue their inquiries.
