In the wake of disturbing reports of sexual assaults and rapes in Brighton, Sussex Police have taken swift action, making arrests and charging suspects in connection with these incidents. Authorities are also working closely with local establishments to enhance safety measures for residents and visitors in the area.
Over the past three weeks, several cases of sexual assaults and rapes were reported, primarily in the Brighton beach area and city centre. While two of the cases are linked to a single suspect who has been charged and remanded in custody, there is no apparent connection between these cases and the ongoing investigations.
Detective Superintendent Richard McDonagh, Head of Sussex Police’s Safeguarding Investigations Unit, expressed understanding for public concerns and assured the victims of specialist support during these investigations. He stated, "Women and girls should be able to enjoy a night out in safety. These incidents highlight the importance of targeting perpetrators, reducing their ability to cause harm, and protecting people in vulnerable situations."
To address the issue, Sussex Police have increased patrols in the affected areas. Collaborating with local pubs, clubs, and venues, they are implementing various safety measures to ensure the well-being of residents and visitors in the city centre.
Detective Superintendent McDonagh encouraged the public to report any threats or discomfort caused by someone’s behavior, emphasising the importance of seeking help from security staff, police officers, or by dialling 999 in emergencies. He also reminded the public of the ‘Ask for Angela’ scheme, which allows individuals feeling unsafe or threatened to discreetly ask for help in city venues. Additionally, he encouraged downloading the Safe Space Sussex app, which highlights safe locations for waiting for a friend or taxi.
The incidents in question began with a report on September 6, where a young woman was raped near Brighton Pier shortly after midnight. Three days later, on September 8, another report emerged of a sexual assault on a woman in her 20s on London Road at around 03:15. A man has been charged with rape and attempted rape in connection with both of these incidents and has been remanded in custody.
On September 10, police responded to a concern for the welfare of a woman in her 30s near the Kings Road Arches at around 05:35. A man was arrested at the scene and has been charged with rape, also remanded in custody. Enquiries are ongoing to trace a second suspect in this case.
Further incidents on September 16 and September 24 led to arrests and ongoing investigations. Detectives are appealing to the public for assistance in locating suspects connected to these cases, and the victims are being supported by specialist officers throughout the investigations.
