Human remains found on two Sussex beaches last December have been formally identified as belonging to Anne Potter, a woman reported missing from Jersey in autumn 2024.
The States of Jersey Police (SOJP) confirmed the heartbreaking development on Friday, following months of forensic investigation and DNA testing.
Timeline of Events
- Anne Potter was last seen on Jersey in autumn 2024, prompting an extensive multi-agency land and sea search involving coastguards, police, and volunteers.
- 11 December 2024: Human remains were discovered on a beach near Brighton.
- 25 December 2024: A second discovery was made on Ovingdean beach, just east of Brighton.
- June 2025: DNA analysis confirmed both sets of remains were a match to Anne.
Official Statement
Detective Chief Inspector Mark Hafey, who led the investigation, said:
“We must unfortunately confirm the death of Anne Potter who went missing in Jersey last autumn.
Remains were located on beaches near Brighton, which have now been confirmed as a DNA match with Anne.
Despite extensive search efforts, Anne was not located at the time. Our thoughts are with her husband, family, and friends.”
Ongoing Inquiries
The UK Coroner has now taken over the investigation and will examine the circumstances surrounding Anne’s death. Authorities have not released any further details and have asked for privacy for Anne’s family.
Anne’s disappearance prompted widespread concern across Jersey, with local communities rallying to support search and rescue efforts. Her confirmed death brings a tragic end to the months-long search.
