An injured dolphin found stranded on an Isle of Wight Beach has been put to sleep
An injured dolphin found stranded on an Isle of Wight has been put to sleep. The coastguard was alerted to the distressed animal on Hope Beach Thursday afternoon. The British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) said the dolphin had a badly broken jaw, with bones protruding through the skin and missing teeth. It also had poor nutrition as a result of the injury and could not be put back in the water. A post-mortem examination is due to take place later.

It had to be removed with the assistances of the Bembridge and Ventnor Coastguard Rescue teams and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue service over night. A specialist Aerial ladder platform and a vehicle normally called upon to free people trapped Road traffic Collisions was mobilised to the scene just after 5pm on Thursday evening. The aerial ladder platform is normally used to tackle high-rise and building fire and to rescue person’s from height. Despite best efforts of members of the British Divers Marine Life Rescue and a local vet the animal was showing signs of distress and injuries. Officers from Hampshire and Isle of Wight Police worked with Island Roads and closed a section of Culver Parade whilst the recovery operation of the Mammal was removed from the sands. It is understood that Post Mortem will be carried out and further investigations carried out at the Oceanography Centre in Southampton.
