A large-scale police operation unfolded in central Newport this evening following a serious knife-related incident, prompting cordons, searches, and a significant emergency services response across the town.
Police sealed off Bowling Green Lane, a pedestrian route that connects Newport Bus Station to Upper St James’ Street, shortly after the incident occurred. The alleyway was cordoned off at both ends, while a simultaneous police presence was reported on South View, a nearby residential street off Trafalgar Road.
Sources indicate that the incident involved two individuals who sustained injuries, with one person reportedly stabbed and another slashed across the face. The nature and extent of their injuries have not been officially confirmed, and police have yet to release a formal statement.
At South View, residents were advised to remain indoors as officers conducted a thorough search of the area, including the use of specialist dog units, potentially in search of discarded weapons or evidence. The road was cordoned off at either end during the search.
The situation drew further attention when the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance was seen landing at St Mary’s Hospital helipad, although it remains unclear if the helicopter’s deployment was directly connected to the ongoing police investigation.
Due to the serious nature of the incident, detectives from Newport CID were called in to lead the investigation. However, by late evening, cordons at both Newport Bus Station and South View had been lifted, indicating that no further forensic examination at the scene was required.
Residents expressed shock and concern over the evening’s events, with many calling for clarity from authorities and reassurance about public safety.
Further updates are expected from police on Monday morning, as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the violent altercation.
