A man has been jailed for throwing a corrosive substance at a teenager in Kingston

Donell Wilkins, 18, of Robin Hood Way, Kingston was sentenced to six years today, Tuesday, 31 July at Kingston Crown Court after being found guilty of throwing upon another person a corrosive substance with intent to burn, maim, disfigure, disable or commit GBH contrary to Section 29 of the Offences against the Person Act. The offence was committed in Fife Road, Kingston at around 6.40pm on 21 July 2017. Wilkins was one of a group of teenagers who became involved in a dispute with two other males. Without warning, Wilkins sprayed the corrosive substance at one of the males, before walking away from the scene. The victim – a 17-year-old male – went to the hospital, where he was treated for burns to his face and eye before being discharged. The exact type of corrosive substance was not identified. An investigation was launched by detectives in Kingston. Officers recognised Wilkins from CCTV footage of the incident, which led to his arrest. He was charged on 7 October and bailed to appear at Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court on 8 November 2017. The trial started at Kingston Crown Court on Monday, 18 June. He was found guilty on Friday, 22 June.
