15 month old baby and Two Others rescued from rocks in Cornwall

Two adults and a 15 month old baby were rescued from rocks in Cornwall yesterday afternoon by the Coastguard helicopter. Just after 1.10pm on Sunday 10 June HM Coastguard received a 999 call from a family who’d found themselves trapped by an incoming tide in the water near Bedruthan Steps in Newquay. Newquay and Mawgan Porth Coastguard Rescue Teams, Newquay Lifeboats and the Coastguard search and rescue helicopter based at Newquay were quickly sent to the scene. Thankfully before the teams arrived the young family had managed to scramble out of the water onto the rocks but were not out of danger yet. The crew from the RNLI managed to swim to the family and treat the casualties who had minor cuts and abrasions from the rocks. The Newquay helicopter winched the mother onboard first and then winched the father and the little baby in a special child rescue valise which is basically a carry cot modified for winching. Despite their ordeal no ambulance was required and the family were safe and well. Piers Stanbury, Duty Controller for HM Coastguard said: “This was a close call yesterday, but the family did exactly the right thing by calling 999 and asking for the Coastguard. Thankfully, they did not try and self-rescue themselves by trying to beat the incoming tide or attempting to climb the cliff. The UK’s coastline is spectacular to explore – but our incoming tides move very quickly and they are can also be very, very dangerous. Even for the experienced, it can be very easy to get cut off. ‘By following a few simple safety tips from HM Coastguard, we can make sure that people get the most of their trip to the coast – especially during the weekend when our coast is a favourite destination for many holiday makers.’ HM Coastguard recommends the following simple safety tips: Make sure that you are properly equipped for walking along coastal paths. In particular remember to wear sturdy shoes or boots and check the weather forecast and tidal times before you set out. Carry a fully charged mobile phone, and tell someone where you are going and what time you will be home. Do not attempt to climb up or down cliffs unless you are properly equipped and trained to do so. Do not attempt to climb cliffs as a short cut back to the top and do not attempt to self-rescue yourself or someone else if they get into difficulty. Our Coastguards are skillfully trained in all manner of rescues, in all terrains and waters. Please enjoy your coastal walk, but make sure you and yours come home again safely. As ever, our message is, ‘Keep safe, but if you see anybody in trouble or if you get into difficulty, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard’. [su_youtube url=”https://youtu.be/xseBi9wHO-4″]
