Police Federation Slams Brutal Attacks on Officers at London Protests

The Metropolitan Police Federation has slammed the horrific violence faced by officers during recent protests in central London. With officers punched, kicked, spat at, and pelted with objects, the Federation declared: “Police are NOT the public’s punchbags.” They are demanding the toughest penalties for those behind the attacks.

Violence Erupts as Officers Face Brutal Assaults

During the bustling central London protests, police were subjected to relentless abuse and assault. Officers tasked with ensuring peaceful demonstrations and enforcing the law were met with punches, kicks, spitting, and objects hurled their way. The Federation warned that the strain on police forces has been “relentless” for months.

Paula Dodds, Chair of the Metropolitan Police Federation, said:

“This appalling level of abuse will not be tolerated and we expect the stiffest sanctions on the perpetrators. We are supporting officers as best we can and wish those injured a swift recovery. We must remember there are no ‘extra’ police officers to police these weekly and seemingly escalating protests… Our colleagues are emotionally and physically exhausted. And it’s not sustainable.”

Police Warning: Resources Stretched to Breaking Point

The Federation stressed that officers must allow lawful protests to go ahead “without fear or favour.” However, repeated disorder is draining resources, forcing cancellations of rest days and pulling officers away from other vital duties. They say urgent action is needed to protect officers and maintain order.
