A murder investigation has been launched after a 75-year-old man was fatally stabbed in Putney during the early hours of Friday, January 24, 2025.
Police were called to an address on Deodar Road, SW15, at 03:36hrs following reports of a stabbing. Officers arrived at the scene alongside the London Ambulance Service and provided emergency treatment to the victim. Despite the best efforts of emergency responders, the man was tragically pronounced dead at the scene.
Although formal identification is pending, his next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.
A post-mortem examination is scheduled to take place later today.
A 30-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody. Authorities believe the suspect was known to the victim, though the precise details of their relationship have not been disclosed.
Detective Superintendent Amanda Mawhinney from the South West Command Unit, which covers Putney, offered her condolences to the victim’s family. She reassured the public, saying: “We believe this to be an isolated incident and there is no wider threat to the public. Although we have made significant progress by making an arrest, I would like to make it clear that our investigation does not stop here.
Detective Mawhinney is appealing for any witnesses to come forward. “We need the local community to help us understand what happened in the early hours of this morning. If anyone was in the area around 3am and saw or heard anything unusual, please contact us as soon as possible.”
A scene has been cordoned off, and there are road closures in place as investigators carry out their inquiries. A heightened police presence is expected in the area throughout the day.
