Lewisham Man Jailed for 11 Years After Shocking Shooting in Brixton

A 20-year-old man from Lewisham has been slammed with an 11-year prison sentence for a brutal attack on a moped rider in South London.

Premeditated Crash and Shoot

Christian Assi was sentenced at Croydon Crown Court on Monday, February 19, after being found guilty of possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life. He also received five years for grievous bodily harm (GBH) and 22 months for shotgun possession without a certificate – all served concurrently.

The terrifying incident unfolded on May 12, 2022, around 7:15 pm on Brixton Hill. Assi, riding as a passenger in a Range Rover, followed an 18-year-old moped rider before the car deliberately rammed him to the ground. Assi then got out and fired a shotgun at the victim, hitting him in the arm.

Fatal Flight Caught on Camera

The injured rider was rushed to hospital for emergency surgery. Assi made a shocking getaway, firing the gun in front of stunned witnesses. CCTV footage captured him handing the shotgun off to an accomplice before vanishing into Brixton’s busy streets.

Police acted fast, using CCTV to track Assi’s movements. He was caught and arrested on June 8, 2022, leading to his conviction.

Police Vow to Crack Down on Gun Crime

“Assi is a dangerous individual who had no regard for either his victim or the wider public,” said Detective Constable Chris Bryant, who led the probe. “We will not tolerate such wanton violence and continue to relentlessly pursue those intent on carrying and using guns on our streets.”

In related news, 53-year-old Edmund Sido was handed 33 months in prison after pleading guilty to possession of a shotgun linked to the attack.
