Passengers planning to travel between London King’s Cross and Edinburgh today are being urged by London North Eastern Railway (LNER) not to travel due to urgent repairs to a bridge on the East Coast Main Line.

The operator confirmed that severe disruption will affect services throughout Sunday, with tickets valid on alternative operators until Tuesday.

Affected passengers can use their tickets with CrossCountry, East Midlands Railway, Greater Anglia, Great Northern, Thameslink, and ScotRail services.

An LNER spokesperson said:

“If you are on board an LNER service, your Train Manager will keep you updated with information about the incident and the impact on your journey today. Our on-board team are working hard to keep you comfortable whilst we get you moving again. If you need urgent help – such as for onward travel connections, flights, or medical needs – please speak to a member of the on-train team.”

Alternative travel routes include:

  • CrossCountry between Sheffield, Doncaster, Leeds, and York
  • East Midlands Railway between London St Pancras, Leicester, and Sheffield
  • Greater Anglia between Cambridge and Peterborough
  • Great Northern and Thameslink between King’s Cross and Stevenage, Peterborough
  • ScotRail between Edinburgh and Glasgow

The disruption comes during the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, which is attracting thousands of visitors to the Scottish capital this month.

The East Coast Main Line usually connects London with Edinburgh via Stevenage, Peterborough, Grantham, Newark Northgate, Retford, Doncaster, York, Darlington, Durham, Newcastle, Berwick-upon-Tweed, and Edinburgh Waverley, with onward services to Aberdeen and Inverness.
