Ex-Scout Leader Convicted of Sick Child Sex Crimes

Ian Silvester, 60, from Portslade, has been found guilty of a shocking string of sexual offences against boys spanning 25 years. The former Scout leader, children’s nurse, and first aid trainer abused his positions of trust to prey on youngsters.

Decades of Abuse Hidden Behind Trusted Roles

  • Silvester worked as a Scout leader, children’s nurse, St John’s Ambulance worker, diving instructor, babysitter, and more over several decades.
  • He was registered as a nurse and children’s nurse until being struck off by the Nursing and Midwifery Council in 2015.
  • Between 1986 and 2011, he sexually assaulted 19 boys connected to his various roles.
  • Many attacks occurred during “first aid training” sessions, where he would abuse the boys under the guise of education.

Digital Evidence Reveals Sick Obsession

When police arrested Silvester, his devices contained over two million files showing a sexual interest in young boys, including 68 indecent images. He was charged with:

  • 44 counts of indecent assault
  • 25 counts of non-penetrative sexual activity with a child
  • 2 counts of causing a child to engage in sexual activity
  • 2 counts of sexual activity with a child under 13
  • 2 counts of making indecent images of children

Justice at Lewes Crown Court

On Wednesday 20 November at Lewes Crown Court, Silvester was found guilty on all charges. He was remanded in custody and will be sentenced on 7 February 2025.

“Ian Silvester’s behaviour shows a committed offender with a clear sexual interest in young boys,” said Detective Constable Nicky Beard. “He showed no regard for the harm he caused, betraying the trust placed in him by victims and their families.”

“Each victim has shown great courage coming forward. We thank them and urge anyone affected by sexual abuse, no matter how long ago, to report it to police.”
