Deadly 6.9 Earthquake Strikes Philippines – 20 Dead, Buildings Smash, Panic Erupts

20 Dead Including Child Crushed in Sleep

A massive 6.9 magnitude quake rocked the Philippines just before 10pm, killing at least 20 people. Among the victims was a child tragically crushed as they slept under falling debris. Four bodies were pulled from the rubble of a San Remigio sports complex, where a basketball game was underway. Three others were killed by a landslide on the outskirts of Bogo, Cebu.

Rescuers Race Against Time for Survivors

The quake hit near Bogo on Cebu Island, affecting towns with a combined population of around 154,000. Rescue teams are combing through San Remigio and Bogo for survivors trapped beneath collapsed buildings.

“There could be people trapped beneath collapsed buildings,” warned provincial rescue official Wilson Ramos.

Search efforts face ongoing challenges from four strong aftershocks over magnitude 5 that have rocked the area since the main tremor.

Buildings Crumble as Streets Descend into Chaos

The epicentre struck 17km northeast of Bogo, causing widespread destruction. Historic churches were damaged, and Daanbantayan town lost power. A commercial building and school collapsed in Bantayan, while a fast food outlet in Bogo suffered heavy damage.

Cebu firefighter Joey Leeguid told reporters:

“We felt the shake here at our station. Lockers moved and we felt dizzy, but thankfully everyone is fine.”

Resident Martham Pacilan described the scene near a church in resort town Bantayan:

“I heard a loud booming noise and saw rocks falling from the structure. Luckily no one got hurt.”

Local carer Agnes Merza said her kitchen tiles cracked, and neighbours fled their homes, with teens taking shelter under a table.

No Tsunami Threat, But Caution Urged

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center confirmed there is no tsunami risk. However, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology warned of possible minor sea disturbances, urging residents in Leyte, Cebu, and Biliran to avoid coastal areas.

The Philippines sits on the notorious ‘Ring of Fire’, known for frequent quakes. While most are minor, last night’s quake showed just how deadly and destructive the region’s seismic activity can be.
