A 21-year-old man remains in police custody following a major emergency response in South Bristol last night, after concerns were raised about possible explosive materials at a residential property.
Avon and Somerset Police were called to South Liberty Lane at 5.55pm on Tuesday 22 July, prompting the declaration of a major incident and the evacuation of more than 60 properties.
Arrest and Investigation
The man was arrested at 7.10pm on suspicion of making an explosive and possession of a Class B drug (cannabis). Initial enquiries have since confirmed the item discovered was not a viable explosive, though a full investigation remains ongoing.
Emergency Response and Evacuations
The Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team arrived at the scene at 7.50pm to ensure the property was safe. A 100-metre safety cordon was established, affecting residents in South Liberty Lane, Risdale Road, and Swiss Lane.

- Residents were directed to Ashton Vale Community Centre for emergency support
- Evacuees were allowed to return home at around 3am on Wednesday 23 July
The major incident status was officially stood down at 7am this morning.

Superintendent Stephanie McKenna, of Bristol South Neighbourhood Policing, acknowledged the community’s patience:
“I know this was likely a distressing time for those involved and we urge anyone with any concerns to contact their local Neighbourhood Policing Team.
I appreciate concerns were raised about the timeliness of updates provided. We always strive to deliver accurate information as soon as possible while prioritising public safety.”
She confirmed that forensic enquiries and property searches are ongoing today, with support from police dogs and specialist teams.
