A murder investigation has been initiated following the discovery of unidentified human remains in a nature reserve in Salford.
The incident unfolded on Kersal Dale, near the Kersal Wetlands, when a member of the public stumbled upon an unknown item wrapped in plastic at approximately 5:50 pm yesterday (April 4). Upon examination by a pathologist, it was determined that the item contained human remains, with confirmation that survival for the victim was not possible. Subsequently, Greater Manchester Police’s Major Incident Team launched a murder probe into the matter.
The identity of the victim remains undisclosed, leaving a family to endure the loss of their loved one. Authorities are working diligently to inform the affected family members as swiftly as possible.
As forensic officers continue their work at the scene, a large woodland area remains cordoned off. Despite ongoing investigations, no arrests have been made thus far, according to a spokesperson for GMP.
Individuals with any pertinent information are urged to step forward, particularly those who may have witnessed suspicious activity in the Kersal Dale vicinity in recent days. Detective Superintendent Lewis Hughes from GMP’s Serious Crime Division emphasized the importance of community cooperation in shedding light on the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Hughes stated, “I want to assure the local community that although this is a disturbing and unsettling find, we have a large visible presence in the area to complete enquiries, provide reassurance and to listen to any concerns. I encourage anyone who may have relevant information to speak to these officers.”
He further added, “There will be a family who have lost a loved one, and we want to make sure they are supported as quickly as possible. Anyone who thinks they may have witnessed something suspicious in the Kersal Dale area over the last few days, could be key to unlocking what happened.
Individuals possessing information pertinent to the investigation are urged to contact the authorities via 101, quoting log number 2695 of April 4, 2024. Alternatively, information can be shared anonymously with the independent charity Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111.
