Emergency crews raced to the scene late on Wednesday evening as locals were told to “stay inside” and keep their windows shut.
Explosion Sparks Inferno
Residents reported hearing a deafening bang that shook their homes just before the fire erupted. Pillars of flame lit up the sky, visible across Swindon. Dozens of panicked locals called emergency services as they witnessed the massive inferno.

Emergency Services Urge Calm
A spokesman for Wiltshire Police said: “We are currently dealing with a serious incident at Groundwell Industrial Estate, Crompton Road. An explosion occurred in one of the industrial units, and we are working with ambulance and fire services to secure the area.”
He added: “A large cordon is in place. Cricklade Road between Queensfield and Thamesdown Drive is currently closed. Nearby residents should stay indoors and close all windows.”
The police confirmed evacuation efforts are underway around the industrial estate, but there is no need for residential properties to evacuate at this stage. The A419 remains open but may be closed if required.
