A man from Harrow has been sentenced after driving at speeds in excess of 140mph on the M4.
Jawad Al Ali, 20, of Malvern Gardens, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, driving without a licence, failing to provide a specimen for analysis, possession of a class B drug and using a vehicle without insurance.
He was sentenced to six months in a young offenders institute today at Swindon Crown Court.
At approximately 8.45pm on August 1, Sgt Will Ayres was conducting speed checks in a marked police vehicle on the M4 near Swindon when he observed a Range Rover driving in excess of 100mph.
Sgt Ayres attempted to pull the vehicle over, but the driver – Ali – failed to stop and made off at speed driving at approximately 147mph along the hard shoulder causing clouds of dust to be thrown into the air and undertaking multiple vehicles.
He left the M4 at junction 17 and was eventually stopped in Kington Langley where he was arrested.
Sgt Ayres said: “The manner of driving by Ali was completely unacceptable and put many road users lives at risk. Not only was he driving along the hard shoulder at over double the speed limit and causing poor visibility for other drivers, but he was seen to undertake multiple large heavy goods vehicles. It does not bear thinking about the consequences of a collision with one of these vehicles at the speed he was driving at. Not only that, but Ali was not insured and had no driving licence and the road side indication device showed the presence of cannabis in his system.”
