Police were called to reports that keys had been taken from the kitchen of a property in Newthorpe Common, Eastwood.

A van is then believed to have been taken from the drive before officers tried to stop a suspect vehicle and the driver crashed into a fence.

Leon Cooper, 24, of Warwick Road, Somercotes, Derbyshire, has subsequently been charged with burglary, theft of a motor vehicle, failing to stop and dangerous driving in connection with the incident, which happened at around 9.50am on Monday (21 March 2022).

Neighbourhood Policing Inspector for Broxtowe Mike Ebbins, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “Vehicles, whether this be cars, vans or other modes of transport, are often essential to their owners and as such when they are taken this has a heavy impact on their everyday lives as well as financially. That is why road crime is a priority for the Broxtowe area”

“Reports such as this will always be met with a robust police response in a bid to track down and return stolen vehicles to their rightful owners and pursue anyone suspected as being involved in this sort of criminality.

“Our uniform officers have done some fantastic work in quickly identifying a vehicle which was believed to have been stolen and our burglary detectives have then worked tirelessly to achieve a charge. The investigation remains ongoing as this goes through the courts.”
