In August 2024, Bryonie Gawith, 29, and her three young children — nine-year-old Denisty, five-year-old Oscar, and 22-month-old Aubree Birtle — tragically lost their lives in a devastating house fire in Bradford.

Shabir, along with co-defendants Sharaz Ali and Calum Sunderland, denied the murders and the attempted murder of Bryonie’s sister, Antonia Gawith.

Death in Custody

A Ministry of Justice spokesperson confirmed that Shabir, from Carlby grove-wales/”>Grove in Keighley, died in hospital on Wednesday while detained at HMP Leeds.

“As with all deaths in custody, the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman will investigate,” the spokesperson added.

Trial Still on for Other Suspects

While Shabir’s death halts part of the upcoming November trial, his co-defendants Ali, who was seriously injured in the fire, and Sunderland remain due to stand trial at Bradford Crown Court.

The community remains shaken as the investigation and legal proceedings continue into this tragic blaze that claimed four innocent lives.
