A Metropolitan Police officer has pleaded not guilty to causing the death of 81-year-old Helen Holland by careless driving.

Christopher Harrison, 67, appeared at the Old Bailey today (December 4) to face charges stemming from a fatal collision on May 10, 2023, in Earl’s Court, London. He spoke only to confirm his name and enter a plea of not guilty during the brief hearing.

The Incident

The tragic incident occurred at the junction of West Cromwell Road and Warwick Road. Ms. Holland was struck by a police motorcycle that was part of a motorcade escorting the Duchess of Edinburgh. She sustained serious injuries and passed away two weeks later.

Reaction

Following Ms. Holland’s death, a Buckingham Palace spokesperson expressed condolences:
“The Duchess of Edinburgh is deeply saddened to hear that Helen Holland has passed away. Her Royal Highness’s deepest condolences and sympathies go to all of Ms. Holland’s family.”

Court Proceedings

Harrison, who was granted unconditional bail, is set to face trial on November 10, 2025.

Public Response

The case has drawn significant attention due to the high-profile nature of the motorcade. Ms. Holland’s family continues to call for justice and greater scrutiny of police operations during such events.

This case underscores the importance of road safety, even during high-security operations involving prominent figures.
