Yellow Weather Warnings Issued as Storm Gerrit Threatens UK and Ireland

The Met Office has issued yellow weather warnings as Storm Gerrit approaches, with forecasts predicting winds of up to 70mph on exposed coastlines and heavy rain and snowfall expected throughout Wednesday and Thursday. The storm poses significant safety risks for those visiting coastal areas, prompting the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) to urge the public to exercise extreme caution, especially along exposed cliffs, seafronts, and piers.

The most potent winds are anticipated to batter the western coasts of England, Ireland, Wales, and Scotland. The Met Office also predicts substantial rainfall and snowfall during the storm’s passage.

RNLI Water Safety Partner, Gareth Morrison, emphasized the dangers of the impending weather conditions: “The forecasted strong winds along with heavy rain and snow are likely to cause dangerous conditions for those visiting the coast around the UK and Ireland. The RNLI advises staying a safe distance away from the water and cliff edges, as the conditions could knock you off your feet or wash you into the sea. It is not worth risking your life.”

Morrison further advised the public on how to respond to emergencies, saying, “If you see someone else in danger in the water, call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard if by the coast, or just 999 if inland. If you have something that floats that they can hold on to, throw it to them. Don’t go in the water yourself – you may end up in difficulty too.”

The RNLI’s safety recommendations include:

  1. Stay well back from stormy, wintery seas and cliff edges to avoid being swept away by powerful waves or gusts of wind.
  2. Check the weather forecast and tide times before heading out to ensure you are aware of any potential hazards and can plan your activities accordingly.
  3. Take a phone with you to call for help in case of emergencies or to alert authorities if you witness someone else in danger.
