The tranquility of Co Waterford has been shattered by tragic events as a woman stands accused of the murder of her six-year-old son.
Ruth Purcell Healy, a resident of Bishopsfield, Williamstown, Waterford, appeared before a special sitting of Waterford District Court on the evening of Tuesday, February 13th, in connection with the death of her son, Matthew Healy.
During the proceedings, Detective Sergeant David Shore informed the court that earlier that same evening, at 6:05 pm, Ms. Purcell Healy was arrested in relation to her son’s death. Subsequently, at 6:35 pm, she was formally charged with murder. When invited to respond to the charge, Ms. Purcell Healy replied, “no, thank you.”
Presiding Judge Kevin Staunton ordered that Ms. Purcell Healy be remanded in custody to Limerick Prison until Tuesday, February 20th. On that date, she is scheduled to appear via video link at Waterford District Court. Furthermore, Judge Staunton directed that the defendant undergo a psychiatric evaluation and receive any necessary medical attention.
The tragic incident unfolded when Matthew Healy was discovered unresponsive in a car shortly after midnight on Friday, February 9th, in the Rathmoylan area of Dunmore East. Despite efforts to revive him, Matthew was pronounced dead shortly thereafter at University Hospital Waterford.
As the community grapples with the heartbreaking loss of young Matthew Healy, an application for High Court bail is anticipated in the ongoing legal proceedings.
