The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is appealing for witnesses after Adam Tidman, 34, died following an incident where he was restrained by Metropolitan Police officers on Borough High Street in the early hours of Saturday, 25 January.

The incident began around 12:55am when police responded to reports of a man causing a disturbance at Belushi’s restaurant. Upon arrival, officers found Mr. Tidman already being restrained by the venue’s security staff. Police then continued to restrain him outside the entrance to the restaurant.

While under restraint, Mr. Tidman became unwell and was attended to by paramedics before being taken to hospital. Despite medical efforts, he passed away on 11 February.
IOPC Launches Investigation
The IOPC was informed of the incident on 25 January and immediately dispatched investigators to the scene and to the police post-incident procedure. The watchdog has gathered evidence, including police body-worn footage, CCTV, and initial accounts from the officers involved, who are currently being treated as witnesses.
An inquest into Mr. Tidman’s death will be opened in due course.
Appeal for Witnesses
The IOPC is now appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the incident or events leading up to it to come forward.
IOPC Director Amanda Rowe said:
“We would like to pass on our thoughts to Mr. Tidman’s family and all of those affected by this tragic incident.”
“It’s possible that a number of bystanders may have witnessed him being restrained on Borough High Street or the events that led up to it. It’s vitally important that we establish the full circumstances leading up to Mr. Tidman’s death. Therefore, we are appealing to anyone who saw what happened to contact our investigators to help us piece together exactly what occurred.”
