A devastating wildfire has been raging uncontrolled on the picturesque Greek island of Rhodes, prompting authorities to carry out emergency evacuations of hundreds of residents and tourists from affected villages and beaches. The situation remains dire as firefighters and rescue teams continue their relentless efforts to tame the blaze, which has been burning for days, fuelled by strong winds and soaring temperatures.

Coastguard vessels, along with more than 20 private boats, participated in a massive operation to evacuate approximately 1,000 people from beaches near the areas of Kiotari and Lardos in the southeastern part of the island, as confirmed by a coastguard official. The urgency of the situation required immediate action to ensure the safety of those in the path of the fire.

Firefighters, aided by air-water bombers, have been battling bravely to contain the wildfire, but new outbreaks have posed significant challenges. Reinforcements from Slovakia have joined the efforts to gain control over the rapidly spreading inferno.

The wildfire initially erupted in a mountainous region on Tuesday and has since caused extensive damage to vast stretches of forestland. On Saturday, the flames reached the seaside village of Kiotari, resulting in damage to three hotels, according to the Athens News Agency.

Compounding the dire situation, civil protection authorities have issued a warning of an extremely high risk of further wildfires not only on Rhodes but also in other parts of Greece. Meteorologists are forecasting temperatures to soar as high as 45 degrees Celsius (113 degrees Fahrenheit) amid a persistent and stifling heatwave. The intense heat and dry conditions have made Greece susceptible to wildfires, and the current weather patterns are expected to persist until the end of the month.

Fires are not uncommon in Greece, but the recent summers marked by hotter, drier, and windier weather have exacerbated the situation, turning the country into a wildfire hotspot. With the climate conditions becoming increasingly severe, authorities are bracing for further challenges in containing the blaze and safeguarding lives and property.
