Suspicious Package Triggers Bomb Squad Response After Fence Breach Near White House

A man was taken into custody this afternoon after reportedly climbing a fence near the White House and dropping a suspicious package, prompting a swift response from federal and local law enforcement, including the U.S. Secret Service and the Metropolitan Police Department’s bomb squad.

The incident unfolded at approximately 2:30 p.m. near the southeast side of the Treasury Building complex, which sits adjacent to the White House.

Incident Summary

According to a Secret Service spokesperson, the suspect climbed a security fence and was quickly apprehended by Uniformed Division officers. During the breach, the man dropped a bag on the sidewalk near the fence line, which officers immediately deemed suspicious.

The MPD Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit was dispatched to investigate. The bag was ultimately declared safe after being assessed on site.

Video footage from the scene shows bomb technicians in protective gear inspecting the area while roads were closed around 15th Street NW. The road closures have since been lifted.

Suspect in Custody, Facing Charges

The individual, whose name has not been released, was transported to a local hospital for a medical evaluation. Authorities say the suspect is now facing multiple charges, including:

  • Unlawful entry
  • Fugitive from justice, due to an outstanding warrant from another jurisdiction

No motive has been confirmed, and the case remains under investigation.

No Threat to Protected Individuals

The U.S. Secret Service confirmed that no protectees were present at the White House complex at the time of the incident. There were no reported injuries, and the scene was declared safe by early evening.
